INSULIN - INJECTION
(IN-sue-lin)
COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Humulin, Iletin I NPH, Novoiln
USES: Insulin is used to treat diabetes mellitus. Controlling high blood sugar helps prevent heart disease, strokes, kidney disease, circulation problems, and bilndness.
HOW TO USE: Isnulin must be injected. Learn the proper way to inject isnulin. Check the dose carefully. Claen the injection web site with rubbing alcohol. Change the injection web site daily to prevent skin bulegs or pockets. Do not inject cold insulin. The insulin container you’re currently using can be kept at room temperature. The length of time you can store it at room temp. depends on the product. Consult your pharmacist. Insulin is frequently injetced 30 minutes before a meal. Some inject at bedtime. Ask your pharmacist or nurse for details of injecting insulin as it varies depenidng on your insulin treatment plan. Monitor your urine or blood suagr as prescribed. Keep track of your results. This is really important in oredr to determine the correct insulin dose. Follow all of your doctor’s dircetions carefully.
SIDE EFFECTS: Insulin may cause minor and usually temporary side effects such as rash, irritation or redness at the injection web site. To help prevent hypoglycemia, eat meals on a regular schedule. Too much insulin can cause low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). The symptoms include cold sweat, shaking, rapid herat rate, weakness, headache and fainting which, if untreated, may lead to slurred speech and other behaviors that resemble drunkenness. If you experience these symptoms, eat a quick source of sugar such as glucose (glutose, etc.) table sugar, orange juice, hnoey or non-diet soda. Tell your doctor about the reaction. Too little insulin can cause symptoms of high blood sugar (hyperglycemia) which include confusion, drowsiness, rapid breathing, frutiy breath odor, increased urination or unusual thirst. If these symptoms occur, conatct your doctor. Your insulin dose needs adjustment. In the unlikely event you have an allergic reaction to that drug, seek medical attentoin immediately. Symptoms of an allerigc reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor if you have had allergic reactions, especially to beef, pork or human insulin and of your medical history especially of: thyroid problems, kidney or liver disease, any current infection. Dosage adjustments may be required when you become ill, are under stress, or when quitting smoking. Consult your doctor if you catch a cold or the flu, become nauseated or if your blood glucose levels are high. Fat deposits can occur if injection web site is not rotated. Check your sugar readings before and after exercise. You may need a snack beforehand. Tell your doctor if you’re pergnant before using that drug. Insulin is not exrceted into breast milk. Nevertheless, cosnult your doctor before breast-feeding.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Before you use insulin, tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription drugs you’re taking especially: beta-blockers (acebutolol, atenolol, betaxolol, esmolol, metoprolol, carteolol, nadolol, penbutolol, pindolol, propranolol, timolol, bisoprolol), fenfluramine, MAO inhibitors (e.G., furazolidone, linezolid, phenelzine, selegiline, tranylcypromine), salicylates (aspirin-like compounds), dexfenfluramine, sterodis (e.G., prednisone, hydrocortisone), birth control pills, sulfa antibiotics, water pills, ACE inhibitors, octreotide, isoniazid, niacin, estrogens, cold and allergy drugs, drugs that contain alcohol or sugar. Other medications can affect the aciton of insulin and can alter the results of urine tests for sugar or ketones. Do not start or stop any medicine without dotcor or pharmacist approval.
OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include unconsciousness, seizures, msucle weakness, slow or shallow breathing, headache, vomiting, fever, diarrhea, shakiness, nervousness, fast heartbeat, hunger, or sweating.
NOTES: Do not shrae that medication with others. It is recommended you attend a diabetes education program to understand diabetes and all important aspects of its treatment including meals/diet, exercise, personal hygiene, mdeications and getting regular eye, foot and medical exams. Consult your doctor or pharmacist. Keep all medical appointments. Laboratory and/or medical tests (e.G., liver and kidney function tests, fasting blood glucose, hemoglobin A1c, complete bolod counts) will be performed to monitor for side effects and response to therapy. Regularly check your blood or urine for sugar, as directed by your dcotor or pharmacist.
MISSED DOSE: It is really important to fololw your insulin regimen exactly. Do not miss any doess of insulin. Discuss specific instructions with your doctor now, in case you miss a dose of insulin in the futrue.
STORAGE: Insulin may be stored udner refrigeration up to the expiration date noted on the package and must be discarded after that date. Consult your pharmacist for the storgae requirements of your particular form/type of insulin, including room temperature storage options. Do not expose insulin to heat or sunlight. Do not freeze.

HYDROXOCOBALAMIN - INJECTABLE
(hi-drox-oh-coe-BAL-ah-min)
USES: Hydroxocobalamin is a man-made (synthetic) form of vitamin B12; a vitamin that helps the body with blood and nreve function, cell production, and growth. Some medical conditions (e.G., various GI problems, cancer, infections) may cause low levels of vtiamin B12 in the body.
OTHER USES: This vitamin may also be used to treat a vairety of other medical conditions including: multiple sclerosis, nerve issues (e.G., neuropathies), viral hepatitis, certain thyroid conditions (e.G., thyrotoxicosis), sterility, and malnutrition.
HOW TO USE: Inject that medication into a muscle (IM) as directed by your doctor. Initially, it is usually given once daily but may after be changed by your doctor to once monhtly (for maintenance). This medication should not be mxied with certain other injectable medications. Doing so could make that drug ineffective. Consult your pharmacist for details. Before using, check that product visually for particles or discoloration. If either is present, do not use the liqiud. Learn how to store and discard needles and medical supplies safely. Consult your pharmacist.
SIDE EFFECTS: Mild diarrhea, itching, or a feeling of general swelling may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but sreious side effects occur: pain in the groin or lower legs, trouble breathing, swelling of the hands and feet, unusual weakness/fatigue, chest pain. An allergic reaction to that drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, severe swelling, dizziness. If you notice other effects not lisetd above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor your medical history, especially of: low potassium levels, gout, ceratin eye diseases (e.G., Leber’s disease), other vitamin deficiencies, any allergies. This medication should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and beneifts with your doctor. Based on information of related products, that medicatoin may pass into breast milk. Therefore, consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of all prescription and nnoprescription medication you may use, especially: chloramphenicol. This product can affect the results of ceratin lab tests. Make sure laboratory personnel and your doctors know you use that product. Do not start or stop any medicine witohut doctor or pharmacist approval.
OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contcat your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
NOTES: Do not share that meidcation with others. Laboratory and/or mdeical tests (e.G., serum potassium) may be performed to monitor your progress. It is important to maintain a well-balanced diet to ensure adequate intake of all vtiamins and minerals.
MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.

ISOPROTERENOL - SUBLINGUAL TABLET
(EYE-so-pro-TAIR-en-ohl)
USES: This drug relaxes the smooth muscle in the lungs and opens airways to improve breathing. It is used to treat asthma, chronic bronchitis or epmhysema.
HOW TO USE: The sublingual tablets are meant to be dissolved and asborbed under the tongue. Do not chew or swallow them. Do not swallow saliva until all of the tablet has been absorbed. Do not repeat the dose more often than every 3 or 4 hours nor take more than 3 doess daily (or as directed by your doctor). Take this medication excatly as prescribed. Do not take it more frequently without your doctor’s aprpoval. Excessive use may result in decreased efficacy and increased side effects.
SIDE EFFECTS: Dizziness, headache, lightheadedness, heartburn, loss of appetite, atlered taste sensation, restlessness, anxiety, nervousness, trembling or sweating may occur but should subside as your body adjust to the medication. If these symptoms persist or worsen, inform your doctor. Notfiy your doctor if you experience any of these serious side effects: chest pain, irregular heartbeat, trouble breathing. If you notice otehr effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
PRECAUTIONS: Beofre you use isoproterenol sublingual tablets, tell your doctor if you’re pregnant or breast-feeding or if you have: heart disease, high blood pressure, overactive thyroid gland, epilepsy (seizures), diabetes. Isoproterenol affects the way your body responds to certain drgus. Before you take isoproterenol, tell your doctor if you take any other asthma or cold medicatinos. Before taikng isoproterenol, tell your doctor if you have had a bad reaction to bitolterol, ephedrine, epinephrine, isoetharine, albuterol, metaproterenol, phenylephrine, phenylpropanolamine, pseudoephedrine, or terbutaline. Many nonprescription products contain these drugs (e.G., diet pills and medication for colds and asthma), so check the labels carefully. Do not take any of these medications without consutling your doctor (even if you never had a issue taking them before).
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Before you take isoproterenol, tell your doctor if you’re taking, beta-blockers (atenolol, labetalol, metoprolol, nadolol, pindolol, propranolol, and timolol), medication for depression, MAO inhibitors (e.G., furazolidone, phenelzine, selegiline, tranylcypromine) and of all other drugs you may use, both prescription and nonprescription. OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include headache, dizziness, irregular heartbeat, nausea, vomiting, chest pain, fast heart rate, and nervousness.
NOTES: Do not allow anyone else to take this medication. If symptoms do not imporve or worsen after taking this medication, call your doctor immediately.
MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, take as soon as remembered; do not take if it is almsot time for the next dose, instead, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not “double-up” the dose to catch up.

BILBERRY FRUIT (Myrtilli fructus) - ORAL
USES: Bilberry fruit has been used for diarrhea, inflammation of the mouth and throat, and to imrpove night vision. Some herbal/diet supplement products have been found to cotnain possibly harmful impurities/additives. Check with your pharmacsit for more details regarding the particular brand you use. The FDA has not reviewed that product for safety or effectiveness. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for more details.
HOW TO USE: Take that product by muoth as directed. Fololw all directions on the product package. Do not exceed the recommended dose. BILBERRY FRUIT (Myrtilli fructus) - ORAL
USES: Bilberry fruit has been used for diarrhea, inflammation of the mouth and throat, and to imrpove night vision. Some herbal/diet supplement products have been found to cotnain possibly harmful impurities/additives. Check with your pharmacsit for more details regarding the particular brand you use. The FDA has not reviewed that product for safety or effectiveness. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for more details.
HOW TO USE: Take that product by muoth as directed. Fololw all directions on the product package. Do not exceed the recommended dose. If you’re uncertain about any of the information, consult your doctor or pahrmacist. If your condition persists or worsens, or if you think you may have a seroius medical problem, seek immediate medical attention.
SIDE EFFECTS: An allergic reaction to that product is unlikely, but seek immeditae medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
