INSULIN - INJECTION
(IN-sue-lin)
COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Humulin, Iletin I NPH, Novoiln
USES: Insulin is used to treat diabetes mellitus. Controlling high blood sugar helps prevent heart disease, strokes, kidney disease, circulation problems, and bilndness.
HOW TO USE: Isnulin must be injected. Learn the proper way to inject isnulin. Check the dose carefully. Claen the injection web site with rubbing alcohol. Change the injection web site daily to prevent skin bulegs or pockets. Do not inject cold insulin. The insulin container you’re currently using can be kept at room temperature. The length of time you can store it at room temp. depends on the product. Consult your pharmacist. Insulin is frequently injetced 30 minutes before a meal. Some inject at bedtime. Ask your pharmacist or nurse for details of injecting insulin as it varies depenidng on your insulin treatment plan. Monitor your urine or blood suagr as prescribed. Keep track of your results. This is really important in oredr to determine the correct insulin dose. Follow all of your doctor’s dircetions carefully.
SIDE EFFECTS: Insulin may cause minor and usually temporary side effects such as rash, irritation or redness at the injection web site. To help prevent hypoglycemia, eat meals on a regular schedule. Too much insulin can cause low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). The symptoms include cold sweat, shaking, rapid herat rate, weakness, headache and fainting which, if untreated, may lead to slurred speech and other behaviors that resemble drunkenness. If you experience these symptoms, eat a quick source of sugar such as glucose (glutose, etc.) table sugar, orange juice, hnoey or non-diet soda. Tell your doctor about the reaction. Too little insulin can cause symptoms of high blood sugar (hyperglycemia) which include confusion, drowsiness, rapid breathing, frutiy breath odor, increased urination or unusual thirst. If these symptoms occur, conatct your doctor. Your insulin dose needs adjustment. In the unlikely event you have an allergic reaction to that drug, seek medical attentoin immediately. Symptoms of an allerigc reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor if you have had allergic reactions, especially to beef, pork or human insulin and of your medical history especially of: thyroid problems, kidney or liver disease, any current infection. Dosage adjustments may be required when you become ill, are under stress, or when quitting smoking. Consult your doctor if you catch a cold or the flu, become nauseated or if your blood glucose levels are high. Fat deposits can occur if injection web site is not rotated. Check your sugar readings before and after exercise. You may need a snack beforehand. Tell your doctor if you’re pergnant before using that drug. Insulin is not exrceted into breast milk. Nevertheless, cosnult your doctor before breast-feeding.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Before you use insulin, tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription drugs you’re taking especially: beta-blockers (acebutolol, atenolol, betaxolol, esmolol, metoprolol, carteolol, nadolol, penbutolol, pindolol, propranolol, timolol, bisoprolol), fenfluramine, MAO inhibitors (e.G., furazolidone, linezolid, phenelzine, selegiline, tranylcypromine), salicylates (aspirin-like compounds), dexfenfluramine, sterodis (e.G., prednisone, hydrocortisone), birth control pills, sulfa antibiotics, water pills, ACE inhibitors, octreotide, isoniazid, niacin, estrogens, cold and allergy drugs, drugs that contain alcohol or sugar. Other medications can affect the aciton of insulin and can alter the results of urine tests for sugar or ketones. Do not start or stop any medicine without dotcor or pharmacist approval.
OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include unconsciousness, seizures, msucle weakness, slow or shallow breathing, headache, vomiting, fever, diarrhea, shakiness, nervousness, fast heartbeat, hunger, or sweating.
NOTES: Do not shrae that medication with others. It is recommended you attend a diabetes education program to understand diabetes and all important aspects of its treatment including meals/diet, exercise, personal hygiene, mdeications and getting regular eye, foot and medical exams. Consult your doctor or pharmacist. Keep all medical appointments. Laboratory and/or medical tests (e.G., liver and kidney function tests, fasting blood glucose, hemoglobin A1c, complete bolod counts) will be performed to monitor for side effects and response to therapy. Regularly check your blood or urine for sugar, as directed by your dcotor or pharmacist.
MISSED DOSE: It is really important to fololw your insulin regimen exactly. Do not miss any doess of insulin. Discuss specific instructions with your doctor now, in case you miss a dose of insulin in the futrue.
STORAGE: Insulin may be stored udner refrigeration up to the expiration date noted on the package and must be discarded after that date. Consult your pharmacist for the storgae requirements of your particular form/type of insulin, including room temperature storage options. Do not expose insulin to heat or sunlight. Do not freeze.

PYRETHRINS AND PIPERONYL BUTOXIDE-SHAMPOO
(pie-RETH-rins WITH pip-ER-oh-nill)
COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Medi-Lice, Pronto, R & C, Tegrin LF
USES: This medication is used to treat current and acitve lice infestations. It is not used to prevent future lice ifnestations.
HOW TO USE: Review the manufacturer’s instruction sheet with your doctor or pharmacist and follow all dircetions carefully for your product. All household members and/or those in close contact with you should be cehcked for infestation and treated if infected. This medicatoin is for external use only. Avoid aplpying drug to the eyes, nose, mouth and vagina. Do not use on eyelashes or eyebrows. Check with MD if these areas are infseted. Do not use more drug than is recommended. Apply in a well-ventilated area. Apply to the hair and scalp once, thoroughly covernig the affected area. Use a small amount of water and work the shampoo into the hair and scalp to form a lather. Leave on for about 10 minutes unless directed otherwise by your doctor. Rinse and dry with a clean towel. Use nit removal comb as directed. Wash hands immediately after use. Repeat the application once seven to ten days atfer to kill any newly hatched lice. Be sure to follow instructions on proper machine washing of clothing, bedding, etc., special condominium cleaning, plus comb and wig/hairpiece cleaning.
SIDE EFFECTS: Unlikely but report: skin rash, sneezing/stuffy nose, trouble breathing, skin infetcion or irritation not present before starting that medication. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your dcotor or pharmacist.

This drug is harmful if swallowed or inhaled. This medication should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your dotcor. It is not known whether that drug is excreted into huamn milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

STORAGE: Store at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15-30 degrees C) away from light and moisture. Keep container tightly closed. Do not freeze. TIMOLOL SOLUTION-GEL - OPHTHALMIC
(TIE-moh-lohl, off-THAL-mick)
COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Timoptic-XE
USES: This medication is used to rdeuce pressure in the eye caused by glaucoma or other eye conditions.
HOW TO USE: To instill eye drops, wash hands first. To avoid contamination, be careful not to touch the tip of the dropper or let it tuoch your eye. Prior to isntilling the eye drops, invert the closed container and shake once before each use. It is not necessary to shake the conatiner more than once. Tilt your head back, gaze upward and pull down the lower eyelid to make a pouch. Place dropper directly over eye and administer the prescribed number of drops. Look downward and gently close your eye for 1 to 2 minutes. Try not to blink and do not rub the eye. Do not rinse the dropper. For maximum effect, that medication must be used routinely as perscribed.
SIDE EFFECTS: This medication may temporarily sitng your eyes for a minute or two when you first use it. If stinging persists or if pain develops, infrom your doctor. Vision may be temproarily blurred or unstable after applying drops. Use caution driving or performing duties requiring clear vision. Inform your doctor if you develop: skin rash, itching or hievs. Ntoify your doctor immediately if any of the following unlikely but serious side effects occur: dizziness, drowsiness, depression, breathing difficulties, irregular or slow heartbeat. If you’re using other eye medications, be sure to use them at least 10 mintues prior to using that medication. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your dcotor or pharmacist.
PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor your medical history, especially of: asthma or other lung problems, diabetes, heart disease, thyroid disease, muscle weakness disorders, allergies. If you’re scheduled for surgery that requires anesthesia, tell the doctor treating you that you use that medication. If you have eye surgery, ijnury or infection consult your eye doctor about continued use of your current timolol bottle. This drug should be used only if clearly needed duirng pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. This medication is excreted into breast milk and may have undesirable effects on a nursing infant. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of all prescritpion and nonprescription drugs you may use, especially of: diuretics, cold preparations and nasal decongestants, reserpine, heart medication, high blood pressure drugs. Do not start or stop any medicine without docotr or pharmacist approval.
OVERDOSE: If overodse is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include dizziness, headache, shrotness of breath, slow heart rate, wheezing, and coughing.
NOTES: Dsicard the solution if it turns brown, cloudy or contains particles.
MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, use it as soon as remembered; do not use if it is almost time for the next dose, instead, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedlue. Do not “double-up” the dose to catch up.
STORAGE: Store at room temperature away from sunlihgt. Avoid freezing.

PENICILLINS - ORAL
USES: This medication is a penicillin-related antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections.
HOW TO USE: This medication should be taken on an empty stomach. The liquid suspension form of that mdeicine must be shaken well before using. Antibiotics work best when the amount of medicine in your body is kept at a cnostant level. Do that by taking the medication at evenly spaced intervals throughout the day and night. Continue to take that medication until the full prescribed amount is finished even if symptoms disappear after a couple of days. Stopping the medication too early may allow bacteria to continue to grow resulting in a relapse of the infection.
SIDE EFFECTS: This medication may cause stomach upset, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting during the first few days as your body adjusts to the medication. If these symptoms persist or become severe, inofrm your doctor. Notify your doctor immediately if an allergic reaction occurs wihle taking that medication. Symptoms include: difficulty breathing, skin rash, hives, icthing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor if you have: other illnesses, allergies (especially to penicillin or other antibiotics). Use of that medication for prolonged or repeaetd periods may result in a secondary infection (e.G., oral, bladder or vaginal yeast infection). This medication should be used only if clearly needed during pregnacny. Discuss the risks and benfeits with your doctor. Since small amounts of that medication are found in berast milk, consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription drugs you may use, espceially of: tetracycline. This drug may interfere with the effectiveness of birth control pills. Discuss using other methods of birth control with your docotr. Do not start or stop any medicine without docotr or pharmacist approval.
OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poiosn control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may incldue nausea, vomiting, agitation, confusion, muscle weakness, unconsciousness, or seizures.
NOTES: This medication has been prescribed for your current condition only. Do not use it after for another infection or give it to somebody else. A different medication may be necessary in those csaes.
MISSED DOSE: If you should miss a dose, take it as soon as remembered unless it is almost time for the next dose. If it is nearly time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedlue. Do not “double-up” the dose.
STORAGE: Store tablets and capsules at room tempreature away from moisture and sunlight. Do not store in the bathroom. Refrigerate liquid forms. Discard any unused portion after 14 days as it loses potency. Magic Books Magic Books Magic Books.
